The eye, chico. It never lies. And Rome has one that's been open since 126 AD. That's where our name came from and it explains exactly what Oculus Lab does all day. Eyeing everything.
Oculus is Latin for eye.
The Romans used the word for one thing in particular: the round opening at the top of a dome. They looked up at that circle of light and called it the eye of the building.
One of those eye is still open to today.
It sits at the top of the Pantheon and it has been open since around 126 AD. No glass. No cover. No shutter. When it rains in Rome, it rains inside the Pantheon and the water drains away through the marble floor.
Nineteen centuries. Nobody has ever closed it.
How to say it
OCK-yuh-luss. /ˈɒk.jʊ.ləs/
Three syllables, weight on the first. The ock sounds like the start of October.
The Romans said it closer to OH-koo-loos, and both work. The one to avoid is oh-CUE-lus, which drops the weight in the middle and makes the whole thing sound like a piece of hardware.
Plural is oculi. OCK-yuh-lye. Rome has more than one of them. We only ever needed the idea of one.
What the eye does
This is the part that made us take the name.
It has no lens. It doesn't focus, tint, magnify, or interpret. Its whole job is to let what's outside come in without touching it.
The light landing on the Pantheon floor at 3pm is the sky at 3pm. It got there without passing through anybody's opinion.
That turns out to be a hard thing to build. Most things that claim to show you the world are busy editing it on the way through.
Prediction markets already have the light
Every prediction market is a vote cast in real money. Someone reads an event, forms a belief and pays for it. Thousand of people do that everyday, every hour, across hundreds of markets.
The truth is already in there. It's priced. Nobody is hiding it.
The problem is the roof. On-chain data is public and it's a mess, scattered across venues, buried inside transactions, moving faster than anyone can follow. The light exists. There's just no opening for it to come through.
So we cut out.
